Guitarist Christopher Kaukali reflects on the spontaneity, collaboration, and trust behind the making of The Endurance of Optimism.
The performance captured on The Endurance of Optimism began without any expectation that it would become an album. I asked guitarist Christopher Kaukali, who brought the group together, to reflect on what he remembers about that night.

The Endurance of Optimism reflects a unique combination of spontaneity, collaboration, and trust, as many great live albums do.
Jacob, John, and I had only played together once, the day prior, and in a different configuration. There was no plan to record the set in the first place—no preconception to dictate how we approached the music that night.
The unusual selection of songs—Paul Motian, Radiohead, original music, standards, and more—created a kind of sandbox for John’s minimalist exploration, sheets of sound, extended technique, and musical stretching.
Many sections of the compositions were cut, extended, repeated, or reassembled on the spot, giving the music an avant-garde sensibility. We walked a fine line between structure and freedom within the compositions.
The standards played near the end of the set, including “Body and Soul” and “On Green Dolphin Street,” were completely impromptu. That spontaneity gave us another degree of freedom and allowed the music to continue changing shape in real time.
Jacob’s accompaniment on drums is phenomenal. His sensitivity to even the most minute changes in texture, along with his remarkable intuition, can be heard throughout the recording. He was constantly responding, shaping, and elevating what was happening around him.
Another aspect of the album that I particularly enjoy is its almost bootleg quality.
There is a rawness and presence to recordings like this that can be difficult to replicate in a more controlled environment. This was only the second meeting of these collaborators, captured in the atmosphere of an understated lounge before a small but captivated audience.
To me, that is one of the defining qualities of great live recordings: the sense that something happened once, in a particular room, among a particular group of people, and was preserved before it could be reconsidered or polished into something else.
Both John and Jacob are among my favorite people to collaborate with. When I assembled this group, I knew they would elevate one another. What I could not have anticipated was that the night would serendipitously become an album filled with so many special moments of interaction.
